The plot revolves around the lives of two World War 2 friends; Samad Iqbal a Bangladeshi and Englishman Archie Jones now both in their midlife. Zadie weaves in and out of their past and present lives as well that of their friends and families in London to create a beautiful tapestry of the different rich cultures that co-exist and clash in Samad's & Archie's world.


Published in 2000 this was Zadie Smith's debut novel that immediately became a bestseller and received numerous awards.
