Our guest today was one of my 1:1 mentorship clients this year and as soon as we met, we immediately clicked. Every time we met over zoom, the conversations were easy, cathartic, and reciprocal. As a client, I am sure Brandon learned plenty from me but the truth is, I learned a lot from him too. This is the beauty of being a teacher, a mentor, and a person.
Today Brandon and I are going to talk about the gifts of slowing down, feeling your feelings, and finding ease in life and work. Before we start, let me tell you a little bit about our guest.
In 2012, Brandon had a profound spiritual shift that led him to quit his day job and finally follow his dreams of becoming a professional musician. Shortly after, he started a consistent yoga practice to help ground and heal his body.
He completed his 200 hour teacher training in 2015 and immediately began weaving his music in with yoga classes by performing live for every class during Savasana. In 2018 he wrote, produced and recorded "Chill Vibrations" under the name "A Musical Yogi". Much of the musical ideas on this album were taken from his performances in class.
He currently teaches online zoom classes and private lessons. He also provides live music for a variety of different yoga classes in the Kansas City area.
You can listen to his music on Spotify.
And he also has meditations and has released some more recent music on his YouTube Channel.
Trigger Warning: In this conversation, Tami and I speak about trauma as a whole and there are some mentions of sexual trauma. If this is something you’d rather not hear, skip this episode and tune in next time instead.
Tami Lysher comes to the practice from a trauma informed lens so in this episode, we take some time to talk about how we can be more open, sensitive, and aware of the needs of our students. Every person comes in with a different experience and as teachers, it’s our job to honor the student’s experience over our own time and time again. So let’s talk about that today -
As a movement educator for more than 30 years, Tami has focused on yoga and pilates. The practices have influenced her professionally and personally: working from the inside to the outside of the body. As a teacher, Tami uses a holistic approach that integrates movement with breathing, the nervous system, and the brain-body connection. She has also created a Trauma-Informed Movement program for both adults and children. She’s a 16 year survivor of breast cancer and yoga was (and still is) truly a major part of her heal.

Today I am welcoming our first male YT to the show - and it’s fitting to me that it ended up being the person you are about to hear from. Jake Waters is one of my friends from teacher training and he and I talk about the winding and unexpected path that we all take towards our purpose.
We chat a lot about how authenticity is the most powerful tool we have as teachers and how to keep in-check with yourself when things fall out of alignment as they tend to do.
Jake is a really special human who is near and dear to my heart. A little bit about Jake…
He was born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He first found yoga in college when a close friend recommended he try a heated vinyasa class at Yoga Landing. After the class, Jake was hooked on the practice and used it as a tool to connect his body to his mind. He completed his YTT in 2016 under Yoga Landing’s founder, Jessica Jollie.
From 2014 to 2020, Jake pursued a multitude of certifications working as a group fitness instructor around Southeast Tennessee teaching yoga, cycling, bootcamps, tabata, kickboxing and strength training while maintaining his personal practice of Ashtanga and vinyasa yoga.
His classes are challenging, but accessible to EVERYONE and combine his love of music, movement and breath while encouraging his students to “be real and meet themselves exactly where they are” each and every time they step on the mat. He believes there is no right or wrong pathway to yoga. It’s a powerful tool for each individual to use to meet their unique spiritual, mental and/or physical needs.
Jake currently resides in New York City working and maintaining a regular practice at his second home, Modo Yoga. You can follow Jake on Instagram @jakewaters7.
On a daily basis, we are inundated with bad news and devastating tragedies. We are holding the entire world on our shoulders in new ways and it only seems to be getting harder. How can we better support our student's mental health when things becoming challenging (as they tend to do)? How can we better tend to their needs in accessible ways? How can we give them an opening to take charge and fit the practice to their needs?
Join me and Cindy Beers as we talk about these challenges and how to best support our students through the ebbs and flows of our modern world.
Cindy Beers is an E-RYT 500 mission-minded entrepreneur responsible for founding, designing, and establishing a successful yoga business that creates a place for people of all ages and body types to practice yoga and mental health techniques in a safe, inviting, and authentic environment. Have you ever wondered if it's ok to say "namaste"? Or use the term "yogi"?
There is much talk in the Yoga world about cultural appropriation and cancelling the use of certain words so I brought in a Sanskrit and yogic history scholar, Marcy Braverman Goldstein.
Marcy Braverman Goldstein, Ph.D. received her doctoral degree in Religious Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She has taught world religions, focused on Indian traditions, at UNC Charlotte and Davidson College, and an Art of Ethical Speech series of classes at the Stan Greenspon Center for Peace and Social Justice. Marcy is the Founder and Creative Director of Sanskrit Revolution, and on the Faculty at Embodied Philosophy. Drawing from her academic background and twenty-five years of yoga practice, she teaches Sanskrit, history, yogic speech, and philosophy at studios, festivals, and universities. nationally. Marcy’s goal is to deepen people’s knowledge and inspire personal growth so that everyone can help to repair our world. Find Marcy and her work at: www.sanskritrevolution.com
