    Domaine un peu paradoxal, la combinatoire se présente comme à la fois simple et complexe, pauvre et riche, facile et difficile, pure et appliquée. Elle occupe aujourd'hui une place quasiment centrale en mathématiques, en particulier à cause de la multiplicité de ses interactions avec d'autres champs de recherche : l'algèbre et la théorie des nombres, les probabilités, la topologie, ou encore la géométrie algébrique.

    L'enseignement que dispensera Timothy Gowers au Collège de France abordera la combinatoire sous une perspective très large, mettant l'accent sur la résolution de problèmes. Outre les outils, qui feront l'objet du cours de la première année, seront traités de façon plus spécifique : l'analyse discrète de Fourier, les liens entre la combinatoire et l'informatique, la théorie des structures quasi-aléatoires, ainsi que la pratique et la philosophie des mathématiques.

    Professeur à l'École polytechnique de 2003 à 2015, Frédéric Magniez co-construit le premier cours de l'école dédié à l'informatique quantique. Il crée et anime en 2006 le groupe de travail national d'Informatique quantique, qui rassemble actuellement 20 équipes de recherche. De 2013 à 2017, il dirige l'équipe Algorithmes et complexité, dont la recherche en informatique quantique est mondialement reconnue. En 2015, il devient directeur adjoint de la Fondation des sciences mathématiques de Paris, un réseau d'excellence regroupant 1 200 chercheurs en sciences mathématiques et informatiques, avant de prendre la direction de l'IRIF en 2018.
