Tom est un homme bon et généreux, toujours prêt à aider les autres malgré les difficultés qu'il rencontre. Au travers de ses aventures, mais aussi de celles d’Elisa, servante dans la même famille que lui, l’autrice met en lumière les injustices et les cruautés de l'esclavage. À l’époque, l’esclavage était pratiqué dans tous les états des Etats-Unis, avant qu’une loi ne l’interdise dans les états du nord, en 1862. L'esclavage était un système dans lequel des personnes, principalement des Africains et leurs descendants que l’on désignait alors comme « nègres », étaient forcées de travailler sans être payées et privées de liberté. Les esclaves, étaient souvent maltraités et considérés comme des biens plutôt que comme des êtres humains. Harriet Beecher Stowe était une fervente opposante à l'esclavage. Elle a écrit "La Case de l'oncle Tom" pour sensibiliser le public aux terribles conditions de vie des esclaves et pour dénoncer cette pratique inhumaine. Son livre a eu un impact énorme et a contribué à changer les opinions sur le sujet. Il a joué un rôle important dans le mouvement abolitionniste, qui visait à mettre fin à l'esclavage. "La Case de l'oncle Tom" raconte une période sombre de l'histoire américaine et fait réfléchir aux valeurs de justice, de liberté et de compassion.
