A celebration of the year with our amazing team, our partnership schools and the work that has underpinned a fantastic year. This episode also shares the link to unconscious competence, how it serves us well in using the 4D framework and why we need to intentionally bring some things back to the world of conscious competence. Thank you to everyone of you for joining us in 2025 and we look forward to having you back with us in 2026.

With wellbeing becoming a common discussion point in schools and organisations, this episode looks at the differences between what schools do and the impact it is having on teachers’ wellbeing. Long gone are the days where wellbeing is a single compliance box on a systemic document you tick, or an afternoon get together at the local with those who are available. It is an intentional act to ensure workplaces are situated to provide the best support they can for those who do the work. Here we look at the three consistent differences seen in schools who are doing wellbeing well.

When we choose to provide teachers with classroom observations it is vitally important that there is clarity on the purpose of observations. They can be used for performance reviews, feedback, or an opportunity to reflect on practice through a coaching conversation. To provide that clarity this episode clearly defines how we at Blackley group approach our classroom observations, the role of consultancy and mentoring in our work and why the role of therapist is left to others more qualified.

Landing on another two of the eight requirements from the Queensland Department of Education’s new document on Effective classroom management, active supervision and explicit skills teaching provide guidance on how to create positive relationships. This episode aligns them with the 4D framework and how my research supports this incredible little package for teachers.

When there is clarity around expectations there is opportunity for reinforcement and redirection around them. In correcting student behaviour, the need for consistent and fair consequences applied is no different to that expected from any human being. We maintain positive relationships when we can see a fairness to our choices of breaking rules. To learn more about Caroline and her 4 Dimensions Framework, head to her website:

Any productive and positive environment stems from humans wanting to be in that environment in the first place. This does not mean there are not challenges, or there is not discomfort. This episode looks at the areas of Differentiation and Active Supervision from the Department of Education, Queensland, new Effective Classroom Management document.

These next few episodes will cover, in more detail, how the new Effective Classroom Manager publication from the Department of Education Queensland, aligns with 4D practise. This is the term we stand beside each other, put a spotlight on the research and work of other great authors and publications to support teachers doing the work of teaching.

I am so excited to be sharing the current placemat on Effective classroom management, that the Queensland Department of Education has released. This little gem is a wonderful resource for teachers and leaders alike. How do we measure it, a whole schools can use the 4D framework as the two align perfectly. The ESCMs have been decommissioned, I have been told. This is a reflection on how far our classrooms have changed since 1996. In this gem from the Department are the research-based qualities for teachers that surround positive relationships.

The standard references to disruptive classrooms behaviour are to blame a society or individual parents for a loss of the basics in discipline and respect. What then is the answer when we can observe the same student in two different classes, and we see completely different behaviours. The research shows us that the teacher and student interactions are different. The interactions shape the environment. The creation of a sense of belonging and an intentional responsibility on creating a tribe in which to be a part of is essential in a world that is detached and where everyone is so busy all the time.

Touching on the work by Frey and Fisher, this episode builds on the last one, providing practical examples for parents, teachers and colleagues on what steps can be taken to move through the struggle and reach an outcome where confrontation and avoidance are removed.

On the back of the Morcombe’s successfully changing our laws to protect children, this episode sits in the work of Blackley, Redmond and Peel and links the research of Bandura, Dweck and Sweller to look at what part we play in developing resilient children. It is so important that we can use struggle to build psychological safety, resilience and a united outcome rather than a state of avoidance and confrontation.

How can teachers transform their practice, and sustain their purpose, by choosing to see beauty in their everyday classrooms?
Amid disruption, non-compliance, workload and challenges, Dr Sarah Lewis introduces us to her concept of aesthetic force and Caroline aligns this with how it can be a powerful tool to establish Dimension One in your classroom.

This week Caroline dives into the TED talk by Julia Galef based on her book - A Scout Mindset. Sharing the characteristics of a scout mindset and how they might positively influence your decision making in classrooms.
The alignment between the 4D framework and the scour mindset is easy to determine with insights into what this can look like in your teaching.

Cognitive load directly impacts decision-making. High cognitive load in complex decision making or novice situations, has an impact on your cognitive bias, potential for heightened affective state, results include diminished executive oversight and superficial information processing.
Looking after our cognitive load is a priority for classrooms where distraction is everywhere and complex decision-making is a given.

How we situate our thinking to rethinking is an intentional act. Our brains encourage cognitive laziness and coupled with the resistant to change knowledge and opinions in our decision making- to create a space for growth mindset requires intentional work.

This week from just two short statements from an article by Hattie and Timperley (2007) I look at the impact that feedback has when we align it with our interactions to create a classroom with high curriculum flow. Along with the impact of self-regulation and how this can be the basis for us differentiating how we interact with students.

When we talk about the use of non-verbal communication in the classroom, the greatest consideration is how it adds to, or takes away, from the flow of the teaching and learning. This episode looks at a great article by Hans & Hans (2015) and the inclusion of Kinesics, Haptics and Proxemics in truly understanding non-verbal communication.

When we disagree, or agree to disagree, we can do it with force, or we can do it with discernment. This episode shares reflection on my own practice and thoughts on how we should leave a conversation where we can care for the feelings of those we disagree with, but also take care of their feelings in the process.
