iCareBetter: Endometriosis Unplugged
Exciting News!

We are back with a bonus episode to share some exciting news. Season 2 of Endometriosis Unplugged will be back in March 2024 with more episodes and stories.

iCareBetter is also announcing the opening of long-term care centers for those suffering from endometriosis to provide ancillary services with a focus on those with endometriosis and pelvic pain.

Long-term care centers for endometriosis can be crucial because endometriosis is a chronic condition that requires ongoing management and support. Here's why such centers are necessary: Specialized Care: Endometriosis requires specialized care from healthcare providers who understand the complexity of the condition. Long-term care centers can offer a multidisciplinary approach involving gynecologists, pain specialists, psychologists, and other healthcare professionals who specialize in managing endometriosis. Comprehensive Treatment: Endometriosis often requires a combination of treatments, including medication, hormonal therapy, pain management strategies, and sometimes surgery. Long-term care centers can provide comprehensive treatment plans tailored to individual patients' needs, ensuring that they receive the most effective care over time. Management of Symptoms: Endometriosis symptoms can vary widely among individuals and may change over time. A long-term care center can help patients manage their symptoms effectively through regular monitoring, adjustments to treatment plans, and support for coping with pain, fatigue, and other challenges associated with the condition. Supportive Environment: Living with endometriosis can be physically and emotionally challenging. Long-term care centers can provide a supportive environment where patients can connect with others who understand their experiences, access educational resources, and receive emotional support from healthcare providers and peers. Continuity of Care: Endometriosis is a chronic condition that often requires lifelong management. Long-term care centers can provide continuity of care, ensuring that patients have access to consistent medical support and monitoring over the long term. Overall, long-term care centers for endometriosis play a vital role in improving the quality of life for individuals living with this condition by providing specialized care, comprehensive treatment, and ongoing support.

Britt is many things, she really is a super-person actually. She is a pelvic floor PT, mom, wife, teacher, friend, colleague, mentor... just to name a few. She is the co-creator of our course which is aimed at educating other healthcare providers in the management of endometriosis.

Today, she shares her journey with us, and it is quite the wild divine story. Finding providers in the mid-west is no joke, and we are lucky to have her helping those in need.

**************************************************************************

Britt received her Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) from Clarke University in 2016. Following receipt of her DPT, Britt entered into the pelvic health world and didn't turn back. Britt is a Board Certified Women's Health Clinical Specialist through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists. Britt is also certified in Dry Needling, Manual Lymphatic Drainage, and a S.T.R.I.D.E Compression Specialist. Britt practices in the Midwest in an outpatient orthopedic setting. Her clinical practice is predominantly in pelvic health across the spectrum of age, gender, and diagnosis, with a niche in female pelvic pain. Britt's caseload also includes some oncology-related rehabilitation, such as lymphedema, and some general orthopedic diagnoses. Britt is involved in teaching continuing education courses, nationally, in content areas related to pelvic health for other physical therapists. She is a co-author, with Jandra Mueller, of the continuing education courses Be A Warrior for Your Warrior and Endometriosis 101, created to educated other providers on management of endometriosis. Britt has endometriosis herself and has navigated the all too familiar journey of many others in seeking treatment and care. Her personal journey continues to fuel her passion for patient advocacy, better education and resource availability to patients and providers, and better care options and access to patients, especially those with endometriosis. When she is not in the clinic Britt can be found pursuing further knowledge in pelvic health, spending time with her family and friends, in the garden or tending to plants, being outdoors, or completing a home project.

#15 Shea's Story Part 2: Healing wounds, life after surgery and gendered injustice in medicine

We are back with part 2 of Shea's story. If you missed part one, please listen! Today we dive deeper into life after surgery and discuss aspects others likely have faced: the realization of being wronged and the difficulty this poses to conditions impacting women.

The timeliness of this episode came as I have been exploring those who have attempted to tackle this topic. Recently Cecelia Plaza's article "Miss Diagnosis: Gendered Injustice in Medical Malpractice Law" is at the heart of some of the discussions of today's episode. Coincidence? I think not. I believe that this is all too present if we stop and listen.

After going down my own rabbit holes, the question really is - who is to blame? The doctor? They are just following guidelines set for them which is rooted in incomplete or misconstrued theories as to the origin of endometriosis and misled guidelines and this is the outcome.

#14 Breaking Barriers: Shea's Story Part 1

Navigating Endometriosis, Neuroproliferative Vestibulodynia, Neurodivergence, Non-Binary Identity, and Chronic Health Conditions

In previous episodes, we had experts discussing neuroproliferative vestibulodynia and mast cell activation syndrome - wondering what this looks like in real life? Join us for today's episode of Shea's Story Part 1.

We explore the extraordinary journey of Shea Shea O'Donnell, a 21-year-old master's psychology student, researcher, and endo warrior & advocate. Shea's story highlights the barriers many of those with endo go through, but as someone with neurodivergence, the journey through chronic health conditions can look a bit different.

From a young age, Shea confronted the challenges of endometriosis and congenital neuroproliferative vestibulodynia, enduring treatments including endometriosis excision, ablation, birth control, and more. Shea's candid revelations offer a window into the emotional and physical struggles entwined with chronic pain and illness.

Shea's narrative expands beyond health conditions; they've embraced their non-binary identity and neurodivergence, navigating mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, and PTSD. With determination, they've woven these facets into a story of resilience.

Shea is also conducting research to investigate how beliefs about reproduction and factors like gender identity, sexual orientation, and adverse childhood experiences affect people's experience living with endometriosis. This study involves completing a comprehensive survey, probing various aspects of participants' backgrounds, endometriosis experiences, beliefs, and histories of adverse childhood experiences.

Participants eligible for the study are individuals assigned female at birth, aged 18 to 50, who have surgically diagnosed endometriosis and reside in the United States. If you meet these criteria and are interested in contributing, you can reach out to endosdsu@gmail.com to confirm your eligibility. Upon confirmation, you will receive a personalized survey link.

As a token of gratitude for participation, at the survey's completion, you'll be invited to enter your email address to receive a $20 gift card. Please note, if you're deemed ineligible to complete the survey, compensation won't be provided.

There is emerging evidence suggesting a potential link between endometriosis and mast cell activation, with some studies indicating an increased prevalence of mast cell activation in individuals with endometriosis. Mast cell disorders, such as mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), have been reported to coexist with endometriosis in some cases, suggesting a possible association.
