The final episode of The Dutcher Snedeker Podcast is here! Sure, I'd be down to pick it up again when it makes sense, but I reflect on just how fun this podcast was to do in 2021 and what I learned from doing it. I also sneak in one more rant to really go full tilt improv one last time! I appreciate all of you for listening, whether it was weekly in 2021 or if you're discovering this down the line, as it snapshots an interesting time in my journey as a creative. Share your favorite moments, check out everything else I'm up to around the internet, and thanks for a fun addition to the year! I talk about the future, and how as a creative I've just come to terms with the fact that events can and will be canceled on a whim, most recently nearly 3 months of work. All I can do is speak honestly in this episode

Today's episode was prompted by a post made by multi-instrumentalist/producer Haruki Hakoyama (Paddlebots), who posted a thought-provoking question in his Instagram story. I read it to ya'll, and the rest is up to whatever words my brain forms in response.

So this is a side that's always difficult for me to show, and it usually manifests in private when I can work through these feelings on my own time. There are many times the grind can be rewarding, but this year has proven that I'm pulling my hair out doing so much extra work when I could be tripling down on the things I love doing that also earn me stability and flexibility in what I do. I try to articulate these feelings, because at the core I am grateful to even be working in this industry that is so deeply tied to who I am, but there are times where I need to vent and I appreciate ya'll who have the patience and understanding with these comments.
Note: I'm not trying to call anybody out, or make anybody feel bad, or even refer to anything explicit in what I'm currently up to, I just wanted to share this side of myself since the emotions where palpable right before filming. Comment or DM me if you want to continue the conversation!

So this episode, I demonstrate some of my thinking and playing throughout the episode on keys, but it translates to a larger item of discussion surrounding "creative solutions to problem solving," so I guess it's a TED Talk now

I take some time after an incredible busy month to reflect on what I'm grateful for this Thanksgiving week! Sure, I'm a little sleepy, but that's just my default setting

As 2021 wraps up, I reflect on the how this solo podcasting experience has gone and chat about the future of this style of content, still a tiny bit stuffy from an exhausting vacation while being sick.

As a freelancer, I am part of a community of storytellers, because we all have stories of all kinds of people that we've had the pleasure (or lack there of) of working with as a contractor. However, there are times where I'm reminded that people "get" what musicians are, but they truly do not remember what's it's like to live so close to the margins or as someone who books work out weeks in advance to assure a future of bills being paid.
No names are mentioned in this video, since the point is to outline the behavior over making it out to be an issue with a specific person. I just like to laugh in the face of these kinds of things!

Fall is here, and that means different things for different people. Pumpkin spice Ugg boots, seeing the leaves change color with an almost cult-like fervor, and cold load-ins juxtaposed next to warm creative times for creatives! I riff on this topic in today's episode

I am just getting over being sick, and it prompted a larger discussion of what rest looks like and how we as a society perceive taking care of one's health and wellness. I use my situation as a vehicle to explore specifically the work/life balance culture that comes with being a creative while also acknowledging what kind of work I need to continue to do to continue to improve.

Sure, I know how to improvise as a pianist, but you do too! Life is full of moments to improvise, and I chat about this viewpoint in this next installment of "Dutcher records a podcast super late because time is so hard to budget!"

Don't get me wrong, I love subbing in projects, I recently did that up north! Meeting new people, rising to a challenge, and enjoying the excitement of playing with a group I've heard or in an area I've never been to as a player.
However, subbing too often leaves you little room for anything else, and as with too much of anything it starts to become old the more times in a row that you do it. I chat about my experience subbing in the past and what was fun and frustrating.
Note: this was taped before a wonderful show subbing in May Erlewine's band The Motivations, that was a perfect example of a subbing gig I'd gladly take!

It's that time of the year in Grand Rapids, Art Prize has taken over downtown! Well, by the time this episode airs publicly, it'll be the last day for 2021, so get on out there if you want to check it out! I talk about my experiences and history with ArtPrize and some of my likes and dislikes with the art competition overall in today's episode!

I get asked this question a lot, and the answer to it, as many with experience in the music industry often understand, is subjective and more complicated than simply striving for fame and fortune. I do my best to answer this subject, but I'm probably going to keep talking about this for years to come as my own definitions of success keep adapting.

I had conversations with various friends over the past few weeks about hobbies, and it got me thinking: what are my hobbies? Do I make time for them in this "hustle-grind" work culture? I dive into video games, work-life balance, and more in this episode!

It's back to school season! With that comes shopping for school supplies, getting your schedule set for classes, and even more adjustments because of a global pandemic. I reflect on my time in school, both regular and music-focused, and consider how insane it would be to try and be in music school during this time.

Let me explain...no seriously, this is what this podcast is going to do. I touch on my nuanced relationship with knowing I have a responsibility to teach others, loving the instructors I learned from, and yet not actively seeking out students or making time to be a teacher, but wanting to educate. Join me in this longer episode of today's podcast!

I have that itch to get back in the shed and work on all kinds of music. I want to go back to my old classical repertoire, learn new tunes of all genres, and carve out time for another burst of playing growth. I talk about this, and more, in this week's episode!
