Our second episode is with the brilliant Holly!
Her answer to Mahdiyyah's question, “If you didn’t want to study medicine and become a doctor, what path would you take?" would involve competitive sport, and Holly is still very active today.
Medicine has been on Holly's radar since her teen years, however, her journey first involved studying for a biomedical sciences degree and working as a research technician before finding her way onto the undergraduate course at Glasgow University where she is now in her second year.
We chat about how to make the most out of your experiences for your application as a mature student, changing up your study style to adapt to medicine and work-life balance utilising the power of personal goals and targets!

Her answer to Maggie's question of, "If you could read any book again for the first time, what book would you choose?" was Einstein's Dreams by Alan Lightman, exploring concepts of time and imagining many different possible worlds - I have already bought my copy! Mahdiyyah first applied to medicine during 6th form, but at that time studied for a BSc in Neuroscience at Queen Mary University of London, where she received a prize for the highest grade in her cohort for two consecutive years. Mahdiyyah applied for medicine again during her final year, completing all three entrance exams, and securing a place at KCL on their undergraduate course where she is now in her final year. We chat about being grounded in yourself and your own achievements when often being reduced to a number in a system, creativity in medicine and the challenge of maintaining balance when having a lot of interests and passions! 🧑🏫 Mature Medic Platform Spotlights: Season 3, Episode 1 🧑🏫
We are kicking off our new season with the wonderful Maggie! Maggie first applied to medicine while studying for the IB in Poland and got to interview stage, but her path took her to a BSc in Biomedicine at Lancaster University, before going on to study an MSc in Stratified Medicine and Pharmacological Innovation at Glasgow University. After graduating she started work as a medical writer while working on competitive UCAT scores to apply to medicine again. Three years of improving UCAT scores and two interviews later, Maggie is now in her second year of undergraduate medicine at Glasgow University continuing to work as a Senior Medical Writer! We chat about all paths having their own advantages, the trade-off of working so hard to gain a place to study medicine but having to work to maintain that place and the feeling of not making the most of the opportunities, and all about her debut novel that will be available to read soon! Abbie completed a BSc in Neuroscience before starting grad med at Warwick, where she is now a 4th (and final!) year student. She loves teaching and MedEd, being involved in JASME and the GOSH summer school, as well as being an advocate for using social media to create resources, network and steer medical education.
We chat about going to the best places for you, applying to medicine in the final year of undergrad and transitioning to medicine, particularly the clinical aspect. As well as getting involved in teaching opportunities, Revue and learning to say no!

🧑🏫 Mature Medic Spotlights: Season 2, Episode 5 🧑🏫
Our next episode is with Dr Lauren-Jane!
Lauren went into higher education from the unusual background of no A-levels, after working for a little while she took an access course with teaching in mind and found a love for learning and education. From there she completed a degree in theology before a range of experiences, including volunteering for the Red Cross, inspired her to study medicine. She started on the Nottingham GEM course as a single mum and is now a core surgical trainee and mum of 2!
We chat about finding a love for studying and getting the education bug, being self-reflective in your study method and being open to change when it's not working and her path to surgery. We also discuss the value of bringing diversity to medicine and sharing experiences to inspire others and looking at preconceptions around surgery.

🎉 Welcome to the second season of Mature Medic Spotlights! 🎉
Starting off the new season we have the wonderful Dana!
Dana has a background in political science and political theory, completing a BSc and MSc in the field. She then went on to achieve her PhD in bioethics at Princeton University and continued on at Princeton as a lecturer. Before starting medicine Dana went back to college to obtain the right A-levels and worked as an HCA in a mental health unit.
Before her impressive academic achievements, Dana started her professional life as a ballet dancer! She is passionate about languages, loves cats and is interested in GP and psychiatry.

Our last spotlight of the season is with Evie! A second-year medical student at Brighton and Sussex Medical School.
Evie completed a BSc in Biomedical Sciences and had an amazing experience as an intern for The Brighton and Hove Food Partnership not-for-profit, even deferring her medicine place a year to work there longer before starting medicine!
We talk about intersecting inequalities and bringing knowledge of the challenges some people face into being a medical student. Increasing confidence over time and the impact that has on interviews and interacting with patients, making sure to schedule in the fun things and research in medicine!

This Mature Medic Spotlight, and the penultimate one of the first season, is with Cat. A first-year medical GEM student at the University of Nottingham!
Cat has a research background, completing a BSc in Biological and Medicine Sciences and an MRes in Translational Medicine. She has also worked as a Veterinary Pathologist assistant, a lab assistant and a festival worker!

This week's Mature Medic Spotlight is with Sabina, a first-year medical student at the University of Birmingham!
Sabina is an international student from the US who has phenomenal experience across the healthcare sector. She previously studied pre-med psychology at the University of Florida before going on to do an MPA in health services management. She is an entrepreneur, as a founder of a healthcare start-up and was a health communication fellow for the National Institute of Cancer!
We talk about prioritising education and balancing extra-curricular activities, disparities in the healthcare system and looking to change them, broaching the gap between research and patients through communication, learning how to learn and competitive karaoke!

This week's Mature Medic Spotlight is with Rebecca, a first-year medical student at the University of Bristol!
Rebecca previously studied Economics, Politics and International Studies at the University of Warwick before working for a short while for a consultancy firm. Before university Rebecca studied in Singapore, she has volunteered as a tutor for students from less privileged backgrounds and is the treasurer for the Bristol lifting society.
We talk about the move from health policy economics to healthcare, transferable skills and different perspectives, and contrasting experiences with the Singapore Red Cross and with a radiologist.

This Mature Medic Spotlight is with Simon, a second-year medical student at the University of Cambridge!
Simon previously studied Pharmacy at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, and worked as a hospital and then community pharmacist for four years before starting medicine.
Simon has carried out a research project in Malaysia, speaks French and plays the piano and the Irish whistles! (Wow, what a combo!)
