In the previous episode I talked about a really special moment when my son picked up a book and read for the first time on his own. For Christmas, my wife has a tradition where we buy the kids something Christmas related, PJ’s or a book and out of the blue, Owen again began reading the book.
It was my wife’s first time seeing him do this.
I started recording it and wanted to share the moment.
One thing that was really funny is that every time there was a “…” (ellipse), he kept saying “dot dot dot” or he’d say “exclamation point” each time one would appear in the book; he’s a ham.

My guest this week on the We are the ADHD Family is Advocateur Melissa Madison.
With over 15 years of experience, Melissa is a dedicated and enthusiastic educational leader who has held many diverse roles in both the Surrey School District and the Greater Victoria School District.
Melissa was Owen’s grade 2 teacher and one of the first that believed in what my wife and I were seeing.
Our conversation centers around parents and teachers advocating for kids. There are plenty of practical tips throughout.
I also share my experience of being held back a grade and how that didn’t help me at all.

I posted some questions to social media about the theme of my last show (when you disclose a diagnosis) and I spoke to 3 parents that had some strong feelings and experiences.
It’s time to hear the stories of Mary, Tana and Jeff.

1) When you tell someone, your child has a disability, do you use specific terminology, do you just say disability, or does it depend on the situation?

On September 6th, I made a presentation to the City of Surrey to start a pilot project to bring in regularly scheduled sensory swim times.
I’ve spent the past few months working to put this together. I have received a ton of support from parents and advocacy groups plus Government officials in the Federal and Provincial Government and the Business Improvement Associations.

In September, my wife called me and said that she had come across a lost autistic boy (non-speaking), so I went out and gave assistance to the police.
I wanted to talk about the encounter, things we experienced, things we learned, things that law enforcement could do better.
And the story does have a happy ending because our daughter recognized the boy from school and he was reunited with his family.

Back in April, my family and I went to sign a petition to save Strong Start, which is a free, low barrier programs for children to be introduced to many of the activities they would experience at school.
Both of our kids have attended, and it was a very positive experience for us.
At the rally though, I met a politician who was from a political party that I was shocked to see there especially considering their stance on many issues.
As my family and I went home, I was left feeling angry because this person was campaigning (even though we don’t have an election officially starting until October 2024) and doesn’t really believe in the reason that many of us we’re there.
The whole episode is centered around the boundaries that we draw, how can we bring people into a conversation.
We have inherited a culture where people work in these silo’s and there isn’t a conversation to go and talk to other people and hear perspectives that are different than yours.

I was invited to do a speaking spot at the “Get on the right ADHD Trail” which is a free summit for Men with ADHD, and I was interviewed by Cathy Goett.
We had a fun conversation just diving into parenting and advocacy and sharing lots of tips.
