Sales = Getting Punched in the Face

Sales in a coaching business isn’t about being pushy, it’s about having the guts to put yourself out there and take the hits that come with it. In this episode, I break down what it really feels like to sell your coaching programs, the unsubscribes, the criticism, and all the punches in the face. While they aren’t proof you’re growing, they’re requirements for it.

I share a real-life example from a coach who launched her program and saw her email list rise and fall like a rollercoaster, the raw, honest side of sales most people don’t talk about.

You’ll learn how to handle rejection, why unsubscribes are actually a good thing, and how to keep showing up even when it hurts.

Here’s what to expect when you start really selling:

  • Unsubscribes and rejections
  • People ignoring your emails
  • Moments of self-doubt when your numbers drop
  • People replying to complain that you’re selling to them
  • People talking behind your back or criticizing you just because you’re marketing — sometimes potential clients, other times your peers or competitors
  • The sound of crickets when it feels like no-one is even listening

👉 Listen in if you’re ready to stop avoiding sales and start treating it as the skill that separates a struggling coach from a sustainable business owner.

Weaknesses Are Not Your Weakness

After more than a decade building Training Tilt, I’ve started to realize that maybe knowing your weaknesses isn’t what holds you back — it’s your blind spots.

The things you don’t yet know are there can quietly limit your growth as a coach and a business owner.

In this episode, I share some personal reflections on:

✅ How strengths, weaknesses, and blind spots actually work together
✅ What I’ve learned about awareness after 10+ years building Training Tilt
✅ How seeing yourself more clearly can unlock sustainable growth

💬 Whether you’re a coach or a creator, this one’s about self-awareness, curiosity, and learning to grow without trying to be perfect.

AI in Coaching: Collaborator or Vending Machine?

AI is changing the coaching landscape—but not in the way many people think. A few months ago, we explored the AI Coaching Hype Cycle, and now that the dust has settled, it’s time to revisit how coaches can actually use AI in their businesses.

In this episode of Endurance Coaching Business, we dive into two very different approaches:

  • AI as a vending machine → quick prompts, generic outputs, shallow results.
  • AI as a collaborator → a true assistant coach that amplifies your philosophy, context, and voice.

We’ll cover:

  • Why AI coaching platforms still miss the human nuance that athletes need.
  • The dangers of relying on generic outputs without your coaching context.
  • Practical examples of vending machine vs. collaborator prompts.
  • Why coaches who learn to use AI well will thrive, and those who don’t risk being left behind.

The takeaway? AI won’t replace great coaches—but it will expose shallow coaching. The future belongs to those who treat AI as a partner in amplifying their expertise, not a shortcut to replace it.

👉 Coaches, I’d love to hear your experiences with AI—what’s worked, what hasn’t, and how you’re experimenting. Send me a message or comment where you’re listening.

Reaching More Ideal Clients with Paid Ads

In this episode, I unpack one of the most misunderstood tools in the business toolkit: paid advertising.

A lot of coaches think paid ads are the shortcut to filling up their roster or selling out their programs—but that’s only part of the story (and honestly, the least effective part when done in isolation).

I dig into:

  • Why paid ads shouldn't be your whole strategy, but rather a distribution channel for your existing content, lead magnets, webinars, and partnerships
  • The three types of ads you should be thinking about: lead generation, brand awareness, and direct sales—and how using them out of order wastes your budget
  • How to create and use lead magnets that actually attract and pre-qualify the right kind of clients
  • The biggest mistakes coaches make with targeting and how to narrow your audience for better results
  • Whether or not to hire an ad manager, and why you still need to stay in the driver's seat

If you’ve been throwing money at Facebook or Instagram ads without much to show for it—or you’ve been hesitant to try them at all—this episode will give you the clarity and strategy you need to make smarter moves.

🎧 Listen, take notes, and walk away with a game plan that aligns with everything you’re already doing in your coaching business.

Building Trust in Communities

How to Build Trust and Get Clients Through Communities (Without Being Salesy)

If you’ve ever wondered how to actually get clients without constantly promoting yourself, this episode is for you.

We’re diving into the idea of building trust within the communities where your ideal clients already spend their time—whether that’s online in Facebook groups or Strava clubs, or in person at local races, expos, or club runs.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why showing up to help is more powerful than pitching your services
  • The difference between online and offline communities (and how to use both)
  • How to engage in a way that builds trust and positions you as the go-to expert
  • Where to find endurance-specific communities, both digital and local
  • The dos and don’ts of sharing links or mentioning your services

This approach is all about playing the long game—creating meaningful connections and showing up consistently, without coming across like a walking ad.

🎧 Whether you're a running coach, triathlon coach, or in the endurance space in general, this one’s packed with simple, actionable advice that will help you get visible in a way that actually works.

Conversations in the Mobile App

We’ve just shipped a bunch of quality‑of‑life improvements to the Training Tilt mobile apps! Both Android and iOS are rolling out now (iOS finishing its staged release over the next few days), and White‑Label/Ultimate Plan customers will see their custom apps update in the coming week.

In this episode, I walk you through:

  • Bug fixes

– Calendar now always jumps to today instead of sometimes scrolling randomly

– Social‑group image uploads on Android work again

– Workout‑description links are clickable on every device

  • Workout detail screen overhaul

– New header with title, duration & intensity summary

– Structured chart supports multiple targets per interval

– “Send to device” and downloads dropdown right up top

  • Inline videos & recipes

– All linked media appears right below the workout—no extra taps

  • Tab reorganization

– Downloads moved into Details, map moved into Analysis

– New standalone tabs for Conversation, Feel Score, and Actual Perceived Exertion

  • Conversation‑style comments

– Workout comments now live as threaded conversations, matching the web app

  • Client Notes go mobile

– Full “Client Notes” conversation UI, private (yellow) vs. client‑visible notes

– Coaches and clients can both chat in‑app, plus switch between multiple clients

– Web app also gets the new conversation view under Communication (off by default for now—toggle it on in Settings)

What’s next?

I’m gearing up to polish social groups and group chat over the next few weeks, then bring our web‑only “Performance” analytics into the apps. Got a feature in the web app you’d love on mobile? Let me know—I’ll scope it and see what’s involved.

Enjoy the update, and happy coaching!

— Cam

We also talk promotion strategies (even if you’re starting with a tiny email list), how to repurpose content you already have, and how to close with a strong, time-sensitive offer that actually gets people to take action.

8 Reasons to Coach With TrainingPeaks

Hey everyone, welcome back to the show! Today, we're diving into the less-than-stellar side of TrainingPeaks—a platform that seems designed to keep coaches stuck in the crowd. If you’re all about losing your unique brand, letting athletes wander off to a marketplace, and dealing with sluggish tech when you need it most, this episode is for you. We'll break down eight reasons why
TrainingPeaks might be exactly what you don’t want, and then we'll chat about an alternative that puts you in the driver's seat.

Episode Bullet Points

  • Blending In with the Crowd
    • Your unique coaching style and brand? They get lost under TrainingPeaks’ overwhelming branding.
    • If you’re happy being “just another coach,” then this is the perfect system for you.
  • Losing Athletes to the Marketplace
    • TrainingPeaks pushes generic training plans and competing coaches via their marketplace.
    • Athletes can easily switch out, taking your hard-earned client relationships with them.
  • Sluggish Platform Performance
    • Peak usage times lead to a sluggish, overloaded platform that barely works when you need it most.
    • Ideal for those who enjoy tech struggles on busy Sunday evenings.
  • Lack of Control Over Business Growth
    • The platform is all about growing their brand, not yours—think of it as renting space where they call the shots.
    • Perfect if you don’t mind your business being a small cog in a much larger machine.
  • Intellectual Property on the Loose
    • Your training plans and coaching insights can easily follow an athlete if they decide to switch coaches.
    • If you’re okay with your intellectual property being as portable as it is, TrainingPeaks delivers.
  • Athlete-Driven Business Decisions
    • The platform lets athletes dictate how you run your coaching business, often to the detriment of your vision.
    • Great if you prefer your athletes making the decisions over your professional strategy.
  • Stifling Innovation in Endurance Coaching
    • TrainingPeaks dominates by keeping the industry stuck in the past, slowing down innovation.
    • It’s the spot for those who don’t mind lagging behind as other industries move forward.
  • Overloading Athletes with Confusing Data
    • Instead of empowering athletes, the platform dumps them with metrics they don’t understand.
    • Enjoy the chaos of explaining data and constantly justifying your expertise? Then you’re set.
  • The Alternative: Taking Back Control
    • If you’re over the status quo and ready to reclaim your unique coaching brand, consider a switch to a platform that works with you.
    • Training Tilt offers the tools to run your business your way, without handing over control to a marketplace giant.

3 Ways to Take Your Coaching Business to the Next Level in 2025

Happy New Year and welcome to 2025. Now is the perfect time to set your coaching business up for its best year yet. A strong start isn’t just about planning—it’s about taking action and getting the support you need to succeed. Whether you’re looking to scale, streamline, or completely reshape your business, the right guidance can make all the difference.

The best athletes have coaches to guide them, push them, and hold them accountable—and the same principle applies to running a successful coaching business. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your approach, a coach will get you where you need to go faster and you'll make less mistakes.

Here are three options to help you take your coaching business to the next level:

  1. Join Taylor Thomas’s Business Accelerator for coaches

  2. Join Michelle Lake’s Dream to 6 for endurance coaches.

  3. Work with me in a 3-month Mastermind + Office Hours program to strategize and execute your business plans using Training Tilt.

A Note on Investment and Commitment

Each of these programs requires a meaningful investment of both time and money. That might feel like a big step, but it’s this level of commitment that ensures you’re fully engaged in the process. When you commit to your goals in this way, you reinforce your focus and dedication, creating the foundation for real progress and growth. Coaches know this.

1. Accelerate Your Growth with Taylor Thomas

Taylor’s Business Accelerator program is a game-changer for endurance coaches looking to scale sustainably. His focus on strategy, operations, and team-building makes this program ideal for those ready to break through barriers and achieve next-level growth.

Learn more: Check out our podcast/video episode about Taylor and his program here.

2. Build a Stronger Business with Michelle Lake

Michelle Lake’s Dream to 6 Program is perfect for coaches who want to combine profitability with purpose. From marketing to building a business that truly works for you, Michelle’s approach empowers you to create something much more sustainable and financially rewarding long term.

Learn more: Dive deeper into Michelle’s program from our podcast/video episode with her here.

3. Join My Mastermind + Office Hours Program

For those looking for a hands-on, personalized approach, my Mastermind + Office Hours program is the perfect fit. If you have big ideas for your coaching business but have not yet been able to execute on them, then this might be a good option for you. Over three months, we’ll work together to:

  • Define a strategy tailored to your coaching business.

  • Set up everything in Training Tilt and other systems I recommend to streamline your operations and enhance your client experience.

  • Step by step Migration sessions where you can move from platforms like Training Peaks to Training Tilt, ensuring minimal disruption for your clients.

  • Weekly 90 minute group calls to work through strategies and execution in a structured way and to keep everyone in the group accountable.

  • Twice a week "Office Hours" sessions were we can meet online as a group to work on executing our own projects but have me and the other members of the group available when you need help.

This program is about action—taking the ideas and goals you have and making them happen. You’ll not only benefit from my guidance but also from a small community of like-minded coaches working toward similar goals. Can I guarantee you will be successful in your business? No, of course not, success is never guaranteed. But if you commit and show up every week, I'll help you work through your strategies and road blocks along the way.

To make this happen I'll need at least 4 coaches to join the group, but to keep it personal and manageable, no more than 6. This program will start at the end of January, and deposits will need to be paid by January 15th to make sure I can confirm we have at least 4 coaches committed. If we don't get 4 coaches committed by the 15th then you'll get a full refund of the deposit and you'll still have the opportunity to join Taylor or Michelle.

Let me know if you interesting be emailing me at cam@trainingtilt.com and I'll send you details of the total cost and how to confirm you spot.

Commit in 2025

Investing in your business is the first step to taking your business to the next level. These three programs offer different paths to success, whether you need expert advice, a clear strategy, or practical help with execution.

Pick the one that aligns with your goals, commit fully, and let’s make 2025 your breakthrough year.
Deciding where to invest your time and money is one of the hardest decisions to make, but the worst decision is always not making a decision at all.

The Best Coaches Communicate Clearly

In this episode, we explore why clear communication is the cornerstone of effective coaching. Discover how to simplify your process, document effectively, and communicate with clarity to empower your athletes and improve their results.

Think Clearly: Simplify the Complex

  • Focus on the essentials your athletes need to execute the plan effectively.
  • Gauge each athlete’s level of understanding and adapt accordingly.
  • Avoid overcomplicating plans; simplicity often leads to better results.

Document Clearly: Build a Roadmap for Success

  • Use straightforward, athlete-friendly language, avoiding unnecessary jargon.
  • Organize plans with bullet points, short paragraphs, or lists for easy reference.
  • Anticipate common questions and provide brief explanations where needed.
  • Maintain consistency across all training resources to build athlete confidence.

Communicate Clearly: Meet Your Athletes Where They Are

  • Adapt communication styles to suit each athlete’s preferences and knowledge level.
  • Regularly check for understanding and refine your approach based on feedback.
  • Keep messages concise, focusing on actionable and relevant information.
  • Balance clear guidance with encouragement to motivate your athletes effectively.

We also explore how Training Tilt’s tools make implementing these practices easier, from content management to AI-powered workout comment suggestions.

The Endurance Coaching Business Podcast
Dream to 6 - Coaching Business with Michelle Lake

In this episode, endurance coach and business mentor Michelle Lake shares invaluable insights for endurance coaches looking to grow their businesses. Michelle discusses her transition from competitive athlete to coaching and then to helping other coaches create sustainable and profitable coaching businesses. Some of the key takeaways include:

  • The Power of Niching: Michelle emphasizes the importance of defining your niche to attract the right clients. By being specific, you resonate deeply with your ideal audience rather than trying to appeal to everyone and connecting with no one.
  • Marketing Misconceptions: Many coaches believe marketing diminishes their credibility. Michelle counters this mindset, explaining that marketing is about finding and connecting with people who truly need your services, not about selling to everyone.
  • Content Creation as a Tool: Content isn't just for attracting clients; it's a way to clarify your message, improve communication, and become a better coach. Michelle views content as a powerful accelerator for personal and professional growth.
  • Community and Coaching for Coaches: Michelle highlights the value of being part of a community of like-minded coaches who can support and inspire each other. She also discusses how investing in coaching can accelerate business growth and overcome common hurdles.
  • Dream to Six Program: Michelle introduces her flagship program, designed to help coaches transform their side-hustle coaching into full-time, profitable careers, with a goal of reaching six-figure incomes.
