While researching intersectionality for this podcast, as well as for my own studies, I came across a 2022 article from academics Monique Both and Kristen Gillespie-Lynch, called ‘Come As You Are: examining autistic identity development and the Neurodiversity Movement through an Intersectional lens’. It encapsulates everything I wish to say about this area, and includes many enlightening concepts and ideas that hadn’t occurred to me. For that reason, I will read out extracts from this article that will make up the bulk of this episode. The writing is pretty straightforward, and includes wonderfully simple explanations of some complex concepts, making it available for anyone interested in the intersecting identities with autism, not just to academic researchers. I will include some additional reading suggestions at the end for anyone who might want to explore these ideas more fully in their own time.

This is a brief overview of a complex identity issue within autism research. All gender identities are valid. This episode talks about how gender is discussed within autism academic research. In academic research, social relationships between autistic people and neurotypical people is often framed as ‘good’ or ‘bad’, positive or negative, without taking account for autistic measures of a successful relationship. Successful social relationships often happen between two or more autistic people when they feel safe and accepted, and may not have to mask. I will talk about recent research on autism and friendships, family dynamics, and anthropomorphism.

Autistic children become autistic adults, yet academic research has yet to uncover many intersectional autistic adult experiences adequately. One aspect of these experiences is sexual debut, pregnancy, and parenthood. This episode includes some research about sexual abuse of autistic children and adults, so please be warned and listen only when you are in a safe mindset to hear it. I will explore academic research on sexual health and education in schools for autistic youths, autistic adults' experiences of pregnancy and postnatal care, and parenthood. Possible supports that could benefit autistic individuals in all these areas will conclude the episode.

Autism is a neurodivergence that will always be present in a person’s life, with some autists needing lifelong support and care in ways that are individual to their specific needs. This is especially true of employment and this episode uncovers recent research into this fascinating area, with some solutions that may result in a more inclusive workplace for everyone.

This podcast explores recently published research on a number of different neurodivergent types. This season I am talking about autism, and in this episode I will go over some recent research on autism in the workplace, and some occupational factors for autistic people. This episode is split into two parts because of the amount of recent research I found on this topic. Find out why only 16% of autistic adults in UK are in full time paid employment according to The National Autistic Society in 2016, and that 77% of autistic people want to work but cannot find employment. How autistic people deal with the process of ageing is not well researched, partly because of the 'missing generation' of autistic people who were never assessed for autism in their youth and who are elderly today. I have gathered the research available to us and discussed ways we can try and support elderly autistic people. Suicide comes up in the research here, so if you don’t want to hear about that right now, please wait until the next episode comes out, and mind yourself in the best way that suits you.

The experiences of menstruation, menopause, and autism, can be extremely challenging for girls, women, and people who have a uterus. I outline the current academic research on these issues as they intersect with autism characteristics. I refer to ‘women’ in relation to people who menstruate and experience menopause, while acknowledging that some non-binary and Trans masculine people also experience menstruation and menopause.

In this episode I will cover recent academic research on masking, or camouflaging, in autistic people. Masking, or camouflaging, is a characteristic of autism, and is highly prevalent in autistic women and girls. It means to purposefully, or subconsciously, display behaviour that is thought to be neurotypical in order to conceal the autistic person’s authentic behaviour.
Suicide comes up in the research here, so if you don’t want to hear about that right now, please wait until the next episode comes out, and mind yourself in the best way that suits you.

This is an introductory episode to the series and the podcast. I go through the terminology, why I decided to begin a podcast about gender and neurodivergence, and why representation is so important in academic research.

The Neurogender Podcast closely examines recent research on neurodivergent people in a gendered context. Why are more women being assessed for neurodivergence in mid and later life? What is neurodivergence, or neurodiversity, in the first place? Why does it all matter? I will answer these and more questions in this podcast.
Each series takes a neurodivergence, and each episode takes one particular characteristic. This season I am looking into recent research on autism and gender. Research shouldn't just be for academics. It affects anyone who is part of society, and those who are being researched. In understanding the recent research about neurodivergence, we understand more about ourselves. Education is for everyone, not just those who can afford it.
