Balancing Your Nutrition: Haley

Haley joins us today to talk about nutrition, hormones, balancing your blood sugar, and sustainable tips for being mindful of how you eat. You can follow her at @haley.garelli on Instagram!

Haley Garelli is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist. Growing up as a dancer she always was trying for the “perfect ballet body”, starting her dieting journey at a young age. Her chronic dieting led to hormone imbalances and even weight gain. After many more attempts at failed diets she learned that restricting more wasn’t the answer. So she learned to eat to fuel her body, heal hormone imbalances and end the diet cycle. Now she is passionate about helping  women who are drained, discouraged and just plain fed up with their constant “dieting” to lose weight, balance hormones and be comfortable in their own skin. She helps them discover what works best for them as an individual, through her functional approach to nutrition so that they can live their life to its fullest.

Why Couples Who Sweat Together, Stay Together

We all know the benefits working out can have on your body and mind. But what about your relationship?

Working out is usually considered a solo activity. While exercise can be a great form of "me time" and self care, studies show that working out with your partner can benefit your relationship. You don't have to do the exact same workout as your partner to feel the benefits of making time to move together. Sharing this part of life with your partner can truly give your relationship new dimension and new life.

Body positivity gets a lot right. Here's what it gets wrong.

Body positivity is a massive trend in our culture and the fitness industry. Brands in every industry are taking steps to include diverse types of bodies in their ads and campaigns rather than showing only one type of body. Despite its popularity, many people are unsure of what body positivity is and how it can coexist with fitness and health.

How to stay on track when you aren't motivated

If January is the time people set goals, February is the time people lose sight of them. People get busy, life happens, and our fitness goals fall by the wayside. 2021 has an extra layer of chaos: We are almost one year into lockdown life. This comes with more uncertainty, anxiety, and stress and less routine, ritual, and motivation.

So, how can you stay on track when you aren't motivated? How can you focus on your goals when nothing is going as planned? Is it possible to be goal-oriented in a time of unpredictability?

Macros 101: Carbs vs. Fat vs. Protein

Exercise is important. But when it really comes down to it, your nutrition is what makes or breaks your success. With a million different diets on the market-- and no shortage of fear-mongering about the dangers of high carb, high fat, or high protein diets-- it can be confusing to know what to do, and more importantly, why to do it.

Workouts are not enough: How to overcome a sedentary lifestyle

It's no secret that modern life leads to less movement. We spend our days sitting at desks, working at computers, and hunched over our smartphones. This lack of movement leads to a whole host of physical problems, not to mention the impact it has on our mental health.

The common misconception is that a 30-60 minute workout can offset the inactivity of the rest of the day. Unfortunately, evidence shows that daily workouts simply aren't enough to undo the damage of an otherwise sedentary lifestyle. What people do when they're not exercising determines their true level of activity and wellness.

Beyond goals: How to create systems for success

Having goals is a great way to look ahead, plan for success, and keep yourself accountable. Setting SMART goals (ie: goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound) is a scientifically proven method for success. However, for many people, goals aren't always enough.

Why does goal-setting fall short? What are goals versus systems? How can we truly create habits that last?

Let's get into it.

RELATABLY FIT
On goals, growth, and getting uncomfortable

The new year is a time to set think about what you want and set goals on how to get there. While fresh starts can happen at any moment, there is something special about a collective time of intention setting.

here's been a big push in recent years to be gentle with ourselves in order to love ourselves as we are. To that end, we've seen more people discouraging the idea of goal-setting and resolutions. While we absolutely advocate for self-love and acceptance, we also stand by the importance of pushing ourselves to be better-- mentally, physically, emotionally, socially, and financially. We advocate for growth. And the only way to grow is to get uncomfortable.

Humans have a tendency to lean into the comfort of familiarity. Pushing our bodies or expanding our minds feels uncomfortable and scary, especially if you don't know if you will "fail." We surround ourselves with things that protect us from new ideas and experiences because we want to feel safe; we want to "succeed." And the best way to feel like we've succeeded is by playing it small.

We are here to encourage you to aim big in the new year.

Love yourself, sure, but push yourself, too. Because pushing yourself works! While only 8% of people actually stick to their New Year's resolutions, that's nothing to sneeze at. Out of 209 million adults in American, 8% of people sticking to their resolutions means that almost 17 million people a year actually succeed. That's major. And that could be you.

Let's get into the specifics of why people give up on their goals, and how to set goals that actually work (scientifically!).
