In this episode, I talk about what it feels like to grow up in Japan, spend most of my adult life in the US, and the process of internal recalibration of my own identity that brought many struggles.
I also talk about what it feels like to live between two worlds during a moment when both sides seem louder, more reactive, and more easily misunderstood than ever due to the rise of global tension.
I share the experience of growing up Japanese, spending almost thirty years abroad, and returning to Tokyo with a mind shaped by two different worlds.
I share the experience of running two cultural operating systems between my ears and the quiet humor of realizing I no longer fully ‘belong’ anywhere except myself, and that it’s ultimately futile to try to ‘fit in’ elsewhere.
I talk about how identity becomes fluid when you belong everywhere and nowhere, and the quiet humor of being a walking Venn diagram translating two cultures that rarely understand each other. I reflect on Japan’s subtle communication, the US’s expressive culture, and how the internet turns the whole world into one giant cafeteria table where everyone talks at once.
This episode is about nuance, compassion, cultural gaps, and the strange hope that comes from realizing most of the conflict online is just noise amplified by algorithms and the nature of such platforms.
The real conversations happen off screen, between people who are willing to breathe, listen, and see the human on the other side.

In this episode, I share what it feels like to live between two worlds.
I talk about growing up in Japan, spending almost thirty years in the U.S., and how the rise of nationalism on both sides makes many of us feel anxious and out of place. I reflect on different cultural context and expectations, how self promotion is frowned upon in Japan, national identity, and the strange confusion and comfort of belonging everywhere and nowhere.
I also introduce the “art of relentless optimism” and how I learned to choose positivity after spending decades immersed in negativity.
From identity struggles to generational shifts to the noise of social media, I explore how we can stay grounded, see people for who they really are, stop letting secondhand information define our worldview, and the importance of firsthand information earned from actually experiencing things with our own senses before reaching concrete conclusions about anything.
This episode is a reminder that most people are good and that borders, categories, and labels are merely human inventions/construct, though it may serve practical purposes to a certain extent.
The real work is choosing optimism, seeing humanity in one another, and pulling each other away from the torrent of negativity that bombards us relentlessly and ubiquitously through various screen-based devices.
Join me in countering the dark force by practicing relentless optimism. lol

In this episode, I talk about the rising anxiety many of us are feeling today and why it is important to zoom out before we drown in the noise.
I share how growing up in Japan during the Cold War, living through 9/11 in NY, and watching the world shift over the past 46 years has shaped how I view this moment.
I look at history , including the optimism of the Industrial Revolution and Paris Expo, and compare it to today’s reactionary climate. I also reflect on how our visual technology has advanced faster than our philosophy and how our ancient nervous systems are struggling to keep up.
Inspired by the story of Musashi and the metaphor of Ukiyo, I explain how I try to stay grounded by mentally sinking to the bottom of the water where things are quiet and clear. This is a reminder to breathe, stay calm, and choose clarity instead of fear.

In this episode, I talk about gratitude and how it reshapes everything we think we need.
I share what I have seen moving between Long Island and Tokyo, places full of material abundance yet full of people who feel stressed, lonely, or overwhelmed.
I explore the illusion of ownership, the weight of having too much, and how hedonic adaptation makes us numb to the very things we work so hard to collect.
I also reflect on community, disappearing social bonds, and how identity itself becomes a habit when we never question it.
This one is about subtracting instead of adding, seeing clearly, and remembering that gratitude is a powerful way back to living with a deeper sense of peace.
NOTE: Hedonic Adaptation is the correct term, not hedonistic adaptation ;)

After almost two months away from the mic, I’m back in Tokyo and thinking about the life I’ve lived between two worlds. I share what it felt like to camp on Long Island beaches, paint with the ocean wind, and then suddenly confront the emotional weight of returning home. I talk about perfectionism, procrastination, ADHD tendencies, and the way overthinking can steal momentum, and how the past decade of back-and-forth between Japan and the US has forced me to examine freedom, responsibility, and how fragile identity can be. I also explore the unsettling energy in the US, the refuge I feel in Tokyo, and the lifelong question of what home truly is.
In the end, this episode is simply me taking another step, grateful for whoever is listening, reminding myself that we can always begin again, even when life feels uncertain.

What if time isn’t a straight line but a spiral?
In this episode, I explore Buddhist views on reincarnation, cross-cultural perspective shifts, and how life itself can feel like a movie or an avatar in a game.
I open up about therapy breakthroughs, resistance as fear, and the paralysis of overthinking.
Along the way, synchronicities like encountering the book, The War of Art remind me that resistance is universal... and the muse waits on the other side. This is a meditation on perspective, confidence, and why Better Late Than Never is more than a title, it’s a way of showing up.

In this episode I talk about the mystery of intuition, the pull to create without knowing exactly why, and how even back pain can become a reminder to show up while camping.
Along with life updates, I share reflections on Picasso’s daily practice, the Japanese tradition of putting spirit into craft, and my own routines of camping, painting, and podcasting since returning from Japan.

What does it mean to be alive?
In this episode, as I recover from a very good rest I had after jet lag, I trace my path from Tokyo nights to New York beaches, from hotels and snowboards to sleeping under the sky. I reflect on the pull of comfort, the complacency that follows, and the deeper rhythm of our ancient DNA that only wakes up when we move, struggle, and create. Inspired by Baraka’s image of a monk with a bell walking through Tokyo, I ask what it means to slow down and be present in a rushing world. This is a meditation on travel, presence, and why Better Late Than Never is more than a title… it’s a way to live .

“Free your mind,” Morpheus said… and maybe he was right.
In this episode, I look at how identity can feel like an avatar in the Matrix, shaped by invisible webs of culture, work, education, family, friends and expectation.
I also share what I experienced at 30,000 feet, seeing the mountains and rivers from the sky that looked like childhood sandbox patterns, and how the larger scale fractals reminded me of the little boxes we live within in our unexamined lives.
From my own internal shift from stoic Japan to the freedom of expression in the US, I reflect on how our lives are often defined by only a handful of people and what it means to break out of those confinements.
Along the way I touch on the importance of celebrating small wins, cultural/identity shifts within and the mystery of time.
In the end I return to the truth I have found, every day we live and every day we die, and the present moment is eternity.
And Better Late Than Never can be more than a title, it can be a philosophy for how to live freely.

In this episode, I start the conversation with the nature of time, and the undefinable quality of something that governs our lives.
From there, I dive into one of the most important topics for artists and creatives…. art and commerce.
I trace a line from ancient amphitheaters and cave walls to the modern music machine, asking what it means to create without labels or gatekeepers.
Along the way, I reflect on creating art, meditation, and snowboarding as teachers in staying present in the moment of NOW, and maintaining creative freedom and integrity as an artist.
We also talk about perfectionism, procrastination, and the tug-of-war between internal truth and external approval… the subjective point of view, and the objective point of view… and why gatekeepers and critics will always be secondary to the art and creative act itself, such as the human urge to sing, paint, and drum around the ancient fire.
From Rick Rubin to Billy Corgan, critiques in art schools to 40 mph wipeouts, this episode is a call for a perception reset for artists and creatives…make first, label later.
Time is undefinable, and the present is where art actually happens.

In this episode, I dive into the Power of Now, and what it means to collapse the illusion of time into a single point....the present moment….now.
The shift I experienced in my early 20s had a huge impact on how I live my life, and it was a simple realization that the past and future are mental constructs.
In my view, it is crucial for us artists and creatives to be present in the moment in order to fully express ourselves and communicate with the world.
Then we time jump to mid-1800s Paris where the Impressionists (btw the term was meant to be an insult by the critics of the time) broke tradition and had their first show outside the Emperor’s Salon.
Kinda punk rock if you ask me.
Along the way, I share why creativity isn’t just an outlet but a call for self-reflection that can take us on a spiritual and/or philosophical journey.
And just as Super Mario Brothers did on TV screens, the game we’ve got to play IRL is, again, all about being here and now.
I kept it around 30 mins again, let me know what you think in the comments.

In this episode of BLTN!
This is the very first BLTN! Shorts, a shorter version of the Better Late Than Never! Podcast, where I drop in quickly with a few thoughts... but it still ended up being over 30 mins long. lol
Today's thoughts: Original VR, human borders and boundaries.
In our daily lives, we talk a lot about personal boundaries to maintain a healthy living.
In this episode, I dive deeper into the topic to reflect on what 'borders' and 'boundaries' mean in our collective lives.
I go from learning Kendo in Japan to a crowded train station in Yokohama, where I saw a salaryman practicing his golf swings, and then to sports fields, to corporate offices... exploring how we humans draw lines (literally and figuratively) that shape our lives.
From the invisible borders in games to the very real borders (physical or metaphysical) of countries, companies, religions, and philosophies, I share the importance of recognizing these boundaries, and what happens when we forget they exist.
We also get into globalization, nationalism, rubber bands, and why connecting with people outside our own domain... and respecting our differences....whether over a meal, while playing sports, making & playing music, or enjoying art together, just might be the key to maintaining peace and avoiding unnecessary conflicts.
Thank you for being here.

Ep. 6 Artist Introduction: Tim Skula
(Intro & outro by Tim - amazing sonic artist & cool dude… scroll down for link)
In this episode of BLTN!
I start off with the importance of education for us humans, and how its outdated model no longer serves us well.
From there, I go off on spontaneous tangents, exploring what practical and responsible dreaming in Japan looks like, how perfectionism can stifle our creativity, and how Gen X’s counter-culture sports may have been a coping mechanism in the lonely latchkey era.
Then we take a little known path down memory lane, reminiscing about my all-time fav movie, Castle in the Sky, while revealing a not-so-known story behind Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki’s past.
I touch on a timely but important message about how we can leave the world a better place for future generations, borrowing inspiring words from Aldous Huxley, Mark Manson, and YES Theory’s recent monologue that ends with ”love over fear,” as I honor the wish of past generations to maintain peace in the world, and how we can achieve it together.
Just as we think we’re going to run out of gas, we make a quick pit stop at filmmaker Godfrey Reggio’s Koyaanisqatsi, fractals in Manhattan, Pi, and Superstring Theory.
Before we cross the finish line, I ponder how art as self-reflection can open doors to a lifelong process of self-discovery and growth, just as philosophy does.
Hold on tight, this is gonna be another bumpy ride!
And remember…

Appreciate your time, as time is priceless!
In this Episode of BLTN!, I dive into the timelessness of art = creativity and the fundamental blind spots of our civilization.
And yes, the hot and important topic of the day... Artificial Intelligence.
I explore the ancient concept of the "Philosopher King" and why a modernized version of this idea is needed in today's rapidly changing global landscape, driven by Silicon Valley and leading tech entrepreneurs.
I pose questions about what it means to be an artist in an age where AI can draw, paint, write, and compose, yet still can't breathe life into a moment the way human presence can.
Along the way, I discuss the most challenging parts of the creative process, ask timeless questions on what "happiness" and "a fulfilling life" really mean, and borrow thoughts and wisdom from the bright minds of the past to contemplate a future we can all get on board with.
As usual, I go all over the place lol... but I circle back to how important it is for us artists to focus on making art that matters, that reaches the hearts of fellow humans, and that transcends screens, borders, walls, and differences... whether cultural, political, financial, linguistic, or ideological.
Because art is the universal language of humanity.

Ep. 4
Hey awesome you!
Thank you for stopping by.. it means the world to me!
In this episode of Better Late Than Never! I explore why creativity is the most overlooked yet vital human faculty and how it is the foundation of our civilization.
I also share about how gratitude - paired with radical honesty - can help us transform our lives.
We wander through Plato’s realm of forms and theory of ideas, touch on 6th degrees of separation, 100th monkey effect (I mistook it as 10,000 monkey phenomena ...oops!), collective consciousness, and ponder on the secrets of the universe...
Along the way, I weave in cosmic perspectives, indigenous wisdom, and reflections on what it means to live with intelligence in a complex world, and question the very definition of the word "intelligence".
This is a journey for the curious - a blend of philosophy, art, and truth-seeking, designed to expand the way you see yourself and the universe around you.
Well, that sounded pretty cool..but as usual, I go all over the place...
Hold on tight, it might a bumpy ride!
And remember.. it's BETTER Late than NEVER...!

Ep. 3
In this 3rd episode, I open up about what it really means to return to creativity at 46, after a decade-long hiatus.
From my childhood art classes in Yokohama to American subcultures of the 90s, from skater culture, hiphop, hc/punk/metal shows, also my own band, coffee house gigs playing acoustic guitar + harmonica, and economic studies to battling perfectionism, procrastination, and identity crisis - I share a bunch of stuff.
As usual, bear with me as I go all over the place, but it will make sense at the end! (I hope lol)
-------
This isn’t just my story.. it's about how any of us at any age can start over...anytime...if we allow ourselves.
I reflect on growing up in Japan, adapting to the life in the US, and how shifting perspectives can lead to peace, purpose, and unexpected transformation.
I share my bag of tricks on practicing Mental Judo daily, and how it can improve all of our lives, while tackling difficult subjects like toxic masculinity, war, and our shared humanity and the deep-rooted desire for a more compassionate and freer world.
Whether you're an artist, thinker, or just someone trying to find their way - this one’s for you.
It’s unedited and kinda all over the place.. but hey, it's real.
And...let's remember...it’s better late than never!

Ep. 2
“This One Lie Almost Took Me Out....The Truth We Forget, and Why TODAY is a GIFT!”
Welcome to my Podcast... it's unedited, just me talking about life and our relationship with it.
I didn’t plan to get this deep, but here we are...
Got a bit emotional, too...for a good reason.
If you are having a rough day... feeling lost or stuck in life, or looking to start over...this episode is for you.. .!
IN THIS EPISODE:
When I was growing up, I believed a lie: that my worth depended on how much I achieved. How many tests I aced. How successful I looked.
That lie nearly broke me—and for a long time, I didn’t even realize it.
It took me to some dark places. But over time, I started waking up. I started getting honest.
This episode isn’t polished. I go off-track (ADHD, hello), I get emotional (which I never used to let myself do), and I talk about a lot..from growing up in Japan’s academic pressure cooker to spending 25 years away from home trying to find who I really am.
I talk about the value of just one day, the lies we unknowingly live by, and how stepping outside your comfort zone (or even just trying a different coffee shop) can start to change everything.
But at the core of the episode.. is this question: What if just one day really is enough to change everything?
This one’s for anyone feeling stuck, behind, or like they’ve been living someone else’s life. You’re not alone. We’re not late. We’re right on time.
If this resonates, please share it with someone who might need to hear it too. And if it got a little heavy—go watch something funny. Laughter is the best medicine. 😊
I promise, there will be funny ones incoming from me.
Thank you for being here.
